Dipteran is an energetic saxophone and percussion duet inspired by an imaginary pursuit of an elusive fly. The saxophonist employs a variety of extended techniques while the percussionist uses several implements to seemingly shoo, swat, and squash the fly, capturing the fleeting and unpredictable nature of chasing a fly. Musically, this piece features enticing motivic development and grooves that add to the piece’s rhythmic intensity and sonic palate. Through this musical narrative, Dipteran engages the listener showcasing expressive possibilities by both performers exploring the creative potential within the frustration of such a mundane yet relatable experience.
